hunt residencies V
Artist Statement:
During my time in residency here at hunt gallery, my studio became a safe place for experimental play. Being that this 10 x 8 foot room was my first legitimate studio- that was not confined to a shared attic space, my living room, or a corner of my childhood bedroom- I felt compelled to expand into my vulnerability. This invitation led me to frequent heart-to-hearts with my younger self.
This body of work overwhelmingly embodies the protection and care of my inner child. Through these 6 pieces, you can see the effort to color outside of the lines. Alongside those attempts, you see that the fears within are restraining the ability to wholly embody the full spectrum of light.
Recurring motifs of headwear, blankets, and balloons symbolize my inner child’s needs of protection and comfort on the journey to work towards freedom from those fears. I play with the boundaries and expectations of texture- hardness versus softness- to show the cyclic nature of the vulnerable self opening and closing. Harsh factors from the outside world influence this expansion and contraction of the safety bubble surrounding myself and my aura.
